The choice between FRP and steel guardrails depends on the operating environment. What are OSHA requirements for FRP guardrail?
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.29 sets the following requirements for all industrial guardrails including FRP systems: top rail height must be 42 inches (±3 inches) above the walking-working surface; mid rails must be installed halfway between the top rail and the surface; the guardrail must withstand a force of at least 200 pounds applied in any direction at any point on the top rail; and intermediate members must not allow a 21-inch sphere to pass through. How long does FRP guardrail last?

How to install an FRP guardrail system?

(2) Set FRP posts using either surface-mount base plates with expansion anchors or direct embedment into concrete, depending on the structural specification. (3) Install top and mid-rail handrail sections using stainless steel or FRP connectors — FRP sections are cut to length on-site using a standard carbide-tipped circular saw or abrasive cut-off wheel. (4) Secure all joints with the specified torque on fasteners — do not over-tighten as FRP is not ductile like steel. (5) Install post covers and end caps as required.
